From time to time I like to share certain resources that I have found credible and helpful. This month will be devoted sharing some great minds in the health and wellness space. I am sharing these resources and using their own words to describe them as to provide their complete background and credentials. I hope you’ll find some of these resources interesting and helpful as I have.

Nutritionfacts.org /Dr. Michael Greger

In their own words “is a science-based nonprofit organization founded by Michael Greger, M.D. FACLM, that provides free updates on the latest in nutrition research via bite-sized videos with captions offered in multiple languages, blogs, and infographics. We are a strictly non-commercial public service health charity. Nearly 2,000 videos on virtually every aspect of healthy eating are already available online, and new videos and blogs are uploaded every day. We also disseminate fact-based information through social media on the benefits of a whole food, plant-based diet for wellness, disease prevention, healthy weight management, and longevity, as well as maintain a Spanish-language site and operate several Chinese platforms.

Everything on the NutritionFacts.org website is free. There are no ads. There are no corporate sponsorships. To remain free of conflicts of interest, we chose to adopt a Wikipedia-type model where users make donations to support the public service we provide. NutritionFacts.org is a labor of love—a tribute to Dr. Greger’s grandmother whose own life was saved by improving her diet.

Dr. Valter Longo

Is the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California –Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles, one of the leading centers for research on aging and age-related disease. Dr. Longo is also the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan, Italy.

His studies focus on the fundamental mechanisms of aging in simple organisms and mice and on how these mechanisms can be translated to humans. The Longo laboratory has identified some of the key genetic pathways that regulate aging in simple organisms and has demonstrated that the inactivation of such pathways can reduce the incidence or progression of multiple diseases in mice and humans. His laboratory has also developed both dietary and genetic interventions that protect normal cells while sensitizing cancer cells to chemotherapy— interventions now being tested in many US and European hospitals.

The Longo laboratory recently published key findings on a 5 day periodic dietary intervention called Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), and showed in randomized clinical trials that FMD reduces the risk factors and markers associated with aging and diseases. Dr. Longo’s most recent studies focus on the use of FMD interventions to activate stem cell- based regeneration to promote longevity.

Dr. Frank Lipman

I believe that true health is much more than the absence of disease. It is a total state of wellbeing, including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social components. Therefore, when considering how to heal the body and create sustainable wellness, it is essential to consider all areas of life that can be influential, along with how those factors may differ from person to person.

Just as we all have unique physical features and personalities, we also have unique internal and biochemical make-ups. Each of us differs in how we digest food, how our bodies detoxify, and which foods nourish or inflame our systems. This explains why some diets and lifestyle changes work wonders for some, but can be harmful to others – confirming that honoring each person’s individuality is essential.

My goal is to help others achieve and maintain optimal wellbeing, and to do so, I believe in identifying the root causes of illness, treating the underlying disturbances, and restoring balance in the body, mind and environment. We are fortunate to have the knowledge to look beyond the current medical model, which emphasizes acute and crisis care. Rather than treating the symptoms, I utilize diet, lifestyle changes, supplements, exercise, stress management practices, sleep and more to improve the functioning of the body as a means of preventing disease and creating vibrant, sustainable health.

I find that I refer to the above resources often and in my case – can spend hours going from one topic to the next. I use the information personally to benefit my own health and to share with others who might also benefit. It’s incredible to see the level of brilliant information that is available to all of us – much of it at no cost. It is endless!

Next time I will share books, recipe sites and other resources that I refer to often. Healthy recipes that are delicious and not “boring” is a very common topic!

Wishing you good health and a great life –

Sheryl
